Chevrolet . How to Pull a Key Out of an IgnitionMany times keys can get stuck in the ignition of your vehicle. Some vehicles have buttons located around the edge of the ignition, which releases a key lock. In other cases, drivers have forgotten to put the automatic transmission gear in the "Park" position. The key will not release unless the vehicle's gear is in "Park." Other times, the steering wheel simply gets locked. If the steering wheel is turned while the vehicle is off, the wheel will lock up and activate a key lock. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Release Button Step by Step : 1 Turn the key towards you to the "Off" position on the ignition. 2 Press the release button with your finger to remove the key lock. 3 Pull the key out of the ignition while still pressing and holding the release button. Remove your finger from the release button once the key has been removed. Park Step by Step : 1 Make sure your vehicle is positioned in the "Park" gear. A light will appear over the "P" symbol on your dash indicating the vehicle is in "Park." Chevrolet . How to Change a Dash Ignition on a 1999 Pontiac Grand AmOver time, the ignition may fail in a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am, causing the need to replace or repair it. A sign of impending ignition failure is when the key has trouble turning, making it difficult for the driver to remove the key from the ignition. Replacement of the ignition can be done with a few simple tools by any novice mechanic. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Socket set Small, standard screwdriver Phillips screwdriver Step by Step : 1 Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery terminal--it is usually the black cable marked by a "-" sign. 2 Remove the trim ring that surrounds the ignition by placing the small screwdriver behind the ring and prying forward. 3 Remove the trim ring that surrounds the radio, climate controls and ignition. Place a small screwdriver behind the ring and pry forward slowly, at different spots around the ring, until it comes away from the surface. Disconnect any electrical connectors connected to the climate controls. 4 Loosen the screws that hold in the radio and remove the radio after disconnecting the speaker and antenna connections from the back of the radio. Removing the radio is not necessary, but it creates more room for maneuvering when working on the switch. 5 Remove the trim ring that covers the instrument cluster by removing the two screws on the top of the ring and pulling forward. 6 Pull out the instrument cluster and remove the electrical connections to completely remove the cluster. 7 Remove the two mounting bolts that hold in the ignition. 8 Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connections. 9 Push in the small tab on the side of the ignition cylinder to release the interlock cable. Step by Step : 10 Turn the key to the "Run" position and press in the small pin on the cylinder to release the final wiring connection. Step by Step : 11 Connect the wiring connections and the interlock cable to the new ignition module. Step by Step : 12 Place the module back into the mount and replace the two mounting bolts. *Lower control arm system. MacPherson strut suspension: There are two types of strut suspensions: conventional and modified (see Figures 11-4 and 11-5). Conventional struts have the coil spring wrapped around the strut cartridge, and modified strut suspensions have a remotely mounted spring. Strut suspensions use no upper control arm. The upper strut mount is what holds the wheel in place. Some cars also have independent rear suspensions, hence the term four-wheel independent suspension. Older rear-wheel-drive cars and most of today's trucks use a dependent-type rear suspension that incorporates the rear drive-axle assembly. .Chapter 11: Steering and Suspension Systems Smooth the Way 1Q C • Coil spring w -Strut cartridge 459
